Conference Overview
More than ever, Oncology Nurse Navigators are taking a more active role with their patients throughout the cancer care continuum. This expanded role has led to a need to improve clinical practice and develop a better understanding of optimizing care and navigational skills for individuals. ONNs must stay abreast of treatment advances, treatment options, insurance requirements, financial obstacles, quality of life issues, and the integration of survivorship principles into clinical practice as well as the ever-changing health care climate.
Summary
The National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators Changing the Face of Cancer Care Conference is designed for oncology nurses, oncology nurse navigators, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, community health care workers, patient navigators, and other experienced health care professionals dedicated to the field of oncology. The two-day conference aims to address the real time needs of the oncology nurse navigator and/or health care professional developing or expanding a disease specific or multi-disciplinary navigation program. Attendees will be provided a wide variety of topics affecting oncology nurse navigators and their programs today. The 2012 program will delve into the genetic and genomic science and the navigation needs of melanoma, gynecological, GI, thoracic, breast, hematologic oncologic cancers. Management of disease, treatment options, side effects, program management and quality of life across the cancer care continuum will also be addressed. There is an increasing focus on providing multidisciplinary care for patients with complex diseases by integrated teams of professionals representing the relevant treatment modalities. At the 4th Annual NCONN Changing the Face of Cancer Care Conference, experts in oncology nurse navigation will provide insight into the optimal multidisciplinary management of patients with all types of cancer and its application to practice.

This activity has been approved for CNE credit hours.
This activity is pending approval from the National Association of Social Workers (NAASW). The exact amount of CE credit will be determined upon content review.

Target Audience
This educational program is directed toward oncology nurse navigators clinical nurse specialists, social workers, community health care workers, patient navigators, and other experienced health care professionals, or patient advocates.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the educational activities, participants should be able to:
- Translate up-to-date evidence and implement into practice.
- Evaluate the data leading to the screening guidelines for breast, head and neck and neurological cancers.
- Interpret various outcomes of the use of nutrition to help improve treatment of the oncology patient.
- Employ evidence based techniques to improve outcomes in patients with head and neck cancer, breast and neurological cancers.
- Integrate care across the interdisciplinary continuum for the management of head and neck, breast, neurological cancers.
- Illustrate current trends and emerging issues under investigation for breast, neurological, and head and neck cancers.
- Assess the mental health of oncology patients and provide appropriate support and resources.
- Implement strategies for preventing, assessing, and managing therapy-induced side effects related to head and neck and neurological cancers.
- Identify current treatment and management of breast cancer treatment options and management options for breast patients.
- Promote excellence in oncology nurse navigation and nursing practice by engaging in a variety of educational opportunities that address evidence based quality cancer are.
- Participate in collaborative learning through networking with fellow oncology nurse navigators, nurses, social workers and associates.
- Summarize issues and strategies affecting the oncology nurse navigator’s contribution to leading the transformation of cancer care.
- Identify the latent effects of cancer treatment in the head and neck patient treated with radiation and chemotherapy.
- Identify the latent effects of cancer treatment in the pediatric cancer patient whom is now an adult.
- Identify and understand the basic mechanisms of genetic contribution to risk of cancer.
- Understand common uses of the terms “cure”, “disease free survival”, and “cancer survivor”.
- Understand the components necessary to implement the ACoS patient standards of care into practice related to survivorship, survivorship distress scale and patient navigation.
- Identify and understand basic mechanisms of genetic contribution to risk of cancer
- Understands consequences of cancer treatment for different developmental stages, including impact on osteoporosis, sexual function and fertility.
